Newsletter Pigeon May 2008

There have been many questions addressed to me lately. In fact, so many, that I can fill up the newsletters for the next year with the answers I would give to them.
For this reason I will try to answer these questions as much as possible the coming time. For the answers on the questions concerning the infections with Trichomoniasis and some other disorders that I brought up recently I refer to the last newsletters.

"Are there also natural resources to fight the Adenovirus?"

Natural resources are asked as a solution for this problem. That is of course an open door for me because I have been searching for ways to solve the Adeno-coli problem in a natural manner. Of course everyone expects that I will bring up the Bony-SGR here. And yes, this product is effective for the prevention and can certainly contribute to the healing of this disorder. But Bony-Sambucca-plus can also contribute here. The Sambucca has been known for its antiviral functioning. And as we know, the Adeno problem is caused by a virus. Therefore, the Bony-Sambucca-plus will be effective for these problems. Acidifying products such as Molkosan from Dr. Vogel but also apple vinegar can help. Although I give these rather preventively than as a cure.

Furthermore, giving colostrum proteins a few times a week can help to keep the intestinal flora healthy. If it is impossible to get fresh or frozen colostrum of cows then you can use a product like the Bony-jongdierpoeder (Bony powder for young animals) in which among other things colostrum of sheep has been processed.

For the prevention of this problem it is important that the intestinal flora remains optimally healthy. In that way, bacteria such as E. Coli get little chance. By supplying Probiotics, the normal intestinal flora increases, which increases the competition for the E.coli bacteria. This way, an extreme multiplication of this bacterium is slowed down.

Further, there are other supportive products in case of Adeno like the Electrolyte potion, but also Bonisol or Bony-Recuglut CT.

If the pigeons are recovering, it can be helpful to administer extra vitamins to support the body and the defence as much as possible.

If the situation is so terrible that we need to use medicines, then my first choice would be Bony-Jodi or powder 29. I developed this medicine especially for this disease. But if you rather use other products then they can be mentioned. The Amco, the 4 in 1 product, trimsulfa, Sl-mix or FC-mix. In short there are several possibilities. However, you should always be certain that the doves are free of hexamitiasis. The previous year I had a pigeon fancier who had to give one cure after the other without result. I recommended to examine the pigeons. And... it appeared not to be Adeno. The pigeons were full of Hexamitiasis. A good cure against Trichomoniasis and everything had been solved.

Therefore.....an examination now and then is highly recommended.

"Why is it still an obligation to vaccinate the pigeons each year against Paramyxo when it is commonly known that after two times, the pigeons can no longer get sick?"

I can understand the frustration that some pigeon fanciers feel. These think that what you can’t see does not exist. But in reality it is just like with roentgen jets, although we cannot see them, they also do exist and have their functioning. We can define the Paramyxovirus in the same way.
If the defence of the pigeons comes under a certain level because they have not been vaccinated for a long time, they can become carriers, who are not necessarily all sick. These pigeons are a potential contagion source for particularly young doves. The fact that we more often see young pigeons with symptoms of Paramyxo, is possibly a sign that there are more healthy carriers lately in the population of the doves. It can also mean that the pigeons are less vaccinated. But recently, we also see more old pigeons that show symptoms of Paramyxo, that also were confirmed in laboratories are as such. These pigeons succumb within limited time to this sickness. It is questionable if it concerns these pigeons that have been too a little vaccinated. If we want to continue to push back the presence of this virus in the environment, then it is advisable to vaccinate the doves regularly, even if they are older than 2 years.

The answers of the next two questions can be grasped into one answer:

"Why is the chance on contagion nowadays this big, can it come from all these preventive cures?"

Don’t the studs become resistant for the current medicines? I have the impression that the medicines hardly work anymore.

The pigeon fancier who asked these questions brought up an important subject in the medical accompaniment in pigeon sports. Although of course, it are not the pigeons that become resistant to the medicines, but the microbes which reside in the pigeons, the background of the problem becomes clear.

To give a profound answer on these questions, it is important that we realise that the world has changed dramatically, especially in the last 40 years. The environment has been dramatically polluted. The industry produces barrels and barrels of waste and other chemical substances which pollute our environment. All living beings live from the "cradle to the sepulchre" in this polluted environment. Moreover the feeding value of the feeding substances which we produce have dramatically deteriorated. Many articles in the newspapers are telling these facts, but it also appears in scientific publications.

The quality of trace elements, minerals and vitamins in the several feeding substances declined severely. The industry tries to overcome this by adding extra vitamins to the food it produces. Milk, fruit juices, pies with extra added vitamins, we can no longer overlook them in the stores. Thus the feeding for the pigeons is also deteriorating. Naturally, this is a dynamic process. Not all pigeons are suffering from all this in an equal degree. But there are of course also pigeons that start falling a part already. These pigeons become more sensible to all kinds of infections as a result of this. Infections that previously had little chance to get hold of the pigeons, now have better conditions to take off. So this type of infections get more and more chances to multiply in our pigeons nowadays. The consequence of this is that the resistance of the doves gets increasingly undermined. These weaker pigeons which are affected the first have become some kind of reproduction tub in which several infectious organisms can adapt the to the pigeons. And it has the appearance that this process starts to happen more and more.

At the end of the eighties and the beginning of the nineties we called it “moss picking” but soon we called it the Adenocoli-complex". But even now we see changes and the appearance of other symptoms so that the last years we speak of the "Young animal sickness syndrome". All kinds of serious and less serious disorders that we can find in young pigeons are part of this syndrome. For a long time now, we no longer only see the vomiting and the diarrhoea that we saw in the middle of the nineties of the previous century. We now see youngsters pine away slowly, doves with yellow mucus caused by herpes which previously only brought on a white membrane. In short the nature of the symptoms becomes worse. A role in the worsening of these complaints is attributed to the well-known Circovirus that nests itself in and undermines the defence organ of the young pigeons at a young age, with detrimental consequences for their health.

Animals with a sick resistance can no longer react properly to the medicines. Many medicines are only meant to weaken the aggressor (bacterium, protozoa etc), whereupon the own defence of the dove must do the rest. But if the defence is weakened, this becomes an impossible task. We then see doves which after a short time fall ill again, with the same symptoms, yes or no. At that moment it seems as if the medicines no longer work. Or it seems as if resistance has arisen against certain medicines, whereas in reality it is probably the immune system that fails.

The administration of stronger medicines seem to ensure only a temporary improvement. But also this approach leads after shorter or longer time to disappointments. And to the complaint that it seems as if the medicines are no longer effective..." The cause of this misery does not necessarily reside in the administration of excessive cures in the first place. The cause must be seeked for there where it lies for real, namely in an overload of the body with chemical substances and an exhaustion of feeding, worsened by infections which results in greater occasion for organisms to grow in it.

The solution is not simple if we look at it this way. In a long term period we must try as much as possible to help the pigeons to raise their resistance. But also by ensuring food that offers enough support for the performances we expect from them in the current pigeon sports.

Flightpackage 2008

Our flight packages are known by many of you for years. Next to the well known packages there’s now a new one. This year we introduce the ‘Flight package-widowers. The emphasis lies on our natural food supplements:
Bony- SGR 300 ml
Bony-flight support 250 ml
Bony omega 3 flight oil
Bony-Super ornithosemix 100 gram
Bonisol 500 ml
Bony-topcondition 500 gram

Price € 69,50

We introduced the flight package above the previous month, but we have not accompanied it by a description. Apparently it has proven itself necessary, looking at the responses of the pigeon fanciers who have ordered this package. We assumed that You were already rather familiar with the products that are in the package products and for this reason we thought not much description was necessary.
1. If the studs are without problems and received a good cure for the swollen heads before the race, the Superornithosemix can be given after the homecoming (preferably) supplied on the food or in the drinking water.
2. The Bonisol is the potion with which the pigeons are supported if they come home after the flights (electrolytes, amino acids, vitamins etc). Losses that have occurred during the flight are rapidly completed.
3. Bony-SGR has to be supplied two to three times a week in the drinking water. If the pigeons never had this potion, then it has to be given a week up to 10 days in a row to let the body of the pigeon get used to it.
4. Bony-Topconditie (Bony Topcondition) (based on proteins) can be supplied together in the second half of the week with Bony-omega-vliegolie (Bony omega flight oil) on the food. We have to coordinate it somewhat with their need in a certain period of the season (short, medium and long distance flights).
5. If the flights become more interesting you can add the Bony-vluchtsuppport (Bont flightsupport) in the drinking water the last day before the flight. (It contains among other things a high dose of vitamin B12.)
